The Company
Do you want to build an innovative company with a positive climate impact?
Then Toqua is the right place for you.
At Toqua, we’re building AI technology that helps shipping companies cut fuel consumption and emissions at scale, solving one of the world’s most urgent climate challenges. Our platform is used directly by customers, and can also be easily embedded in partner products. By 2029, we aim to power 10,000 vessels - the emissions equivalent of removing every single car from the roads in Belgium. What you build will directly move that needle.
Toqua consists of a young and ambitious team that values ideas over hierarchy.
We believe work should be a place of ownership, learning, and high standards.
Most importantly, we believe job satisfaction comes from working on something meaningful with people who care deeply about what they build.
Job Description
Toqua is looking for a high-ownership Operations Lead to help run and scale the company.
This is not a narrow operations role. You will work at the heart of the business, helping make sure Toqua runs efficiently and scales well as we grow. You will take ownership across a broad range of company-critical topics — from finance, HR, legal, grants, and internal projects, to solving whatever operational problems are most important at a given moment.
We are looking for someone who combines strong execution with sound judgment. Someone who enjoys bringing order to complexity, building systems from scratch, and taking responsibility for making things work well. Someone who is just as comfortable rolling up their sleeves on operational detail as they are contributing to strategic discussions.
In this role, you will work closely with the leadership team and help translate priorities into consistent, high-quality execution. You will be expected not only to drive things forward, but also to think critically, raise issues early, and push back when needed.
This is a hands-on role with broad responsibility. It is ideal for someone who wants to work at the core of a company and is excited to grow into a COO role over time.
Responsibilities
- Help run and strengthen Toqua’s operational backbone as we scale
- Take ownership across a broad range of operational topics, including finance operations, HR/people operations, legal/admin, grants, and internal projects
- Build and improve the systems, processes, and ways of working that help the company scale effectively
- Translate company priorities into clear execution, follow-through, and accountability
- Identify bottlenecks, gaps, and operational risks early, and solve them proactively
- Take ownership of messy, high-leverage problems that do not clearly belong to one team
- Work across functions to keep priorities aligned and the business moving forward
- Support leadership with strong business judgment and practical input on strategic decisions
- Help maintain a high bar for quality, reliability, and attention to detail across how Toqua operates
- Contribute to building a company that is not only fast-moving, but also well-run and built to last
Qualifications
- Ideally you have prior experience in a broad, hands-on role such as operations, business operations, chief of staff, founder’s associate, strategic operations, or a similar generalist position, ideally at a start-up or scale-up
- You enjoy broad responsibility and are comfortable working across very different domains
- You take ownership naturally and follow through reliably
- You are highly proactive: when you see something unclear, broken, or inefficient, your instinct is to fix it
- You have strong attention to detail and high standards for execution
- You think in systems, processes, and scalable ways of working
- You are comfortable with ambiguity and do not need everything to be perfectly defined before taking responsibility
- You have good business judgment and can contribute meaningfully to strategic conversations
- You have strong people sense and communicate clearly across functions and personalities
- You are confident enough to challenge ideas, push back when needed, and raise issues early
- You are excited by the idea of helping build a company from the inside out
- Ideally, you are looking for a long-term role in which you can become a key part of the company’s leadership over time
This role could be a great fit if you
- like being the person who makes things run better
- enjoy broad ownership more than narrow specialization
- like switching between execution, problem-solving, and strategic thinking
- are energized by building structure and systems in a fast-moving environment
- want to work closely with leadership and have real influence on how a company scales
- are excited by the idea of growing into a major leadership role over time
This role is probably not the right fit if you:
- prefer narrowly defined responsibilities
- want to focus only on strategy without hands-on execution
- dislike operational detail
- are looking for a highly structured corporate environment
- prefer staying within one specialized function rather than owning problems across the business
What we offer
- Work in an ambitious & motivating environment
- Autonomy and lots of deep ownership
- An informal and supportive way of working
- Flexible working hours, remote working options and competitive pay
- The chance to join a fast-growing company and share in the financial success of what you build via stock options
